What will we have investigated?
The Environmental Impact Report describes the purpose of the project and why it is needed. It also describes the current situation, such as:
- Which plants and animals are found
- Which natural areas are included
- Water and air quality
- How the soil is used
- Noise
Possible effects
We then look at the possible effects on the environment for each solution. For example, we commission research into:
- Noise impact
- Vibrations
- Air quality
- Effects on plants and animals
- Soil and water
- Health effects
- Risks of the transport of hazardous substances
- Effects on landscape when new track is built
Measures
In the EIR plan we will then make proposals to avoid, reduce or compensate for negative impacts. These may include design modifications, such as noise barriers, long-haul rail to reduce noise impacts or adjusting routes to avoid sensitive natural areas. These may also require technical solutions, such as cleaner technologies to reduce air pollution.
